Power Your iPod With Your Heartbeat?

Picture
Sounds too good to be true, right? Not if researchers have their way. A team of researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology are working on a technology called nanogenerators. These small devices sense movement of any kind and transform that movement into an electric current. Right now, these nanogenerators produce a low level of electricity, but if they are combined from many movements, they can build up to a larger current, perhaps a current large enough to power an iPod or a cell phone.

This would be a major break through for electronics. Imagine never having to plug your phone or iPod in to charge it. Instead, the nanogenerator is attached to your heart and simply uses your heartbeat to generate motion and thereby electricity. Or maybe you have the nanogenerator hooked up to your hand and you open and close your hand, thereby producing electricity. It's a cool technology and all possible because of the way energy transfers from one form to another.

Life in the Universe? Maybe...

Picture
In major news this week, a NASA scientist announced his research of a unique type of meteorite has revealed the presence of possible alien life.

The image on the far left is a type of large bacteria found on Earth. The image on the right is what this NASA scientist is claiming is the fossilized remains of a type of bacteria that came to Earth by catching a ride on the asteroid that crashed.

If his claims are true, this would quite possibly be the biggest discovery in science of all time. It would prove we're not alone in the universe and there may be much more life out there somewhere.

For now, a team of 100 well-respected scientists have been asked to review the study and come to their conclusions. We'll see what happens. Here's to hoping!
